Many organizations these days need market research data to ensure they are competitive as they carry out their businesses. Since they do not have enough manpower in-house for all the research needed, they outsource this service to research companies.
One such research company that I have worked for is Wonder. I outline my online research work experience for this company and show you how you can earn over $10 per hour working for them. I also show how you can increase your earnings working for Wonder.
What is Wonder?
Wonder is a research company with its headquarters in New York City. When writing this article, Wonder has close to 50 full-time staff working from the headquarters and over 4,000 freelancers from all over the world who do the online research work. Freelance researchers at Wonder are known as analysts.
The Wonder analysts range from students, parents, professionals, retirees, etc. Anyone can work at Wonder as long as you qualify.
Wonder prides itself as a personal research assistant company whose clients span from individuals to Fortune 500 companies. Depending on their size, wonder charges their clients for every question besides a monthly subscription fee.
Wonder believes it would cost the companies many times more to do the online research work in-house. Their most popular clients are consultancies, ad agencies, and venture capital firms.
Most of Wonder’s online research work has focused on technology, business, and marketing, although their clients can ask any question. The company’s goal is to provide high-quality research in the shortest time possible for the client.
The company breaks questions into smaller components for different analysts to handle simultaneously.
Doing online research work as a Wonder research analyst
As a Wonder researcher or analyst, as the company calls them, you have a flexible schedule and can work whatever time you want. You start by working on the online jobs they have approved you to work on, and as you gain more experience on the platform, they allow you to apply for other jobs.
The more you work, the more you earn, and you can complete as many projects as you want so long as there is work on the dashboard and you have access to it.
The main source of communication at Wonder is the Slack messaging platform. Analysts must be on Slack as they work in case a staff member needs to communicate something on the projects they are working on.
The Slack platform is also a great way for analysts to communicate with each other, ask questions, report problems, provide feedback, and have fun on the watercooler Slack channel. All work and no play can be monotonous.
As an analyst, you log on to the Wonder Platform 24/7, go to the dashboard and start working. If you don’t feel like working, you may choose to check the slack channels and see what is happening besides catching up with fellow analysts.
Wonder analysts get paid once per week via PayPal. You can track your earnings on the dashboard as you continue working to know how much pay you will get on payday.
Online research work available at Wonder

Wonder divides the questions received into different parts. They also create funnels where each component feeds into the next one. Research analysts are only allowed to work on their pre-approved components. They get approval after passing various tests.

Chat
The work of a chatter is to chat with the client via instant messaging to understand their question completely. If need be, they make any clarification with them. The chatter also determines the client’s objectives to guide the interpreter on the best path for the research process. To become a good chatter, one needs to have problem-solving skills plus an understanding of the research process.
How much do chatters earn?
You earn $3 per chat; a chat may take anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes.
Interpret
The interpreter’s job is to understand the client’s objectives from the information received from the chatter. They then break up the question into specific and clear requests for other analysts to handle.
The interpreter also ensures the requests are sufficiently scoped for analysts to handle within the agreed time.
After interpreting a job, the interpreter sends it to the
dashboard for approved source analysts to work on it.
How much do Wonder interpreters earn?
As a Wonder interpreter, you earn $4 for the first request in
the project you are working on and $2.50 for the subsequent requests in the
project.
Sourcing
The work of a sourcing analyst is to understand the interpreted research question. They then search the internet for sources that will satisfactorily answer it. Besides the selected sources being high-quality sources, they should also be publicly available so that the client will not have to pay for sources that are behind paywalls.
How much do sourcing analysts earn?
If a sourcing job passes through review successfully, you earn $16 each. Searching the internet for high-quality sources can take an average of two hours.
Copy editing
A copy editor at Wonder is responsible for taking the approved sources from the sourcing analyst and editing the draft following Wonder’s style guidelines. They ensure that the response is written in an organized and professional manner and that it is free from all mistakes.
How much do Wonder copy editors earn?
Each copy editing job at Wonder earns you $10, and you spend 30 minutes to one hour doing the work.
Review
Wonder offers two review jobs: source review and write review jobs.
As a source reviewer, your work is to go through the client’s questions to understand the requirements. You then go through the sources and summary notes provided by the source analyst to make a decision on whether the sources provided fully answer the client’s question.
If the sources are sufficient, they are then forwarded to the copy editor, and the source analyst is paid. The source analyst may be asked to revise them if they are not. If they are completely off point, the sourcing work is given to a new analyst to do from scratch. Work given to a new analyst is not paid for.
A final or write reviewer reviews the client’s question and then looks at the final written response to assess if it fully answers the client’s response. If they are satisfied, the request passes to the final edit; if not, it is either revised or redone.
How much do Wonder reviewers earn?
A review job takes anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes, and you get paid $3.50 per job.
Final edit
The work of the final editor is to edit final responses, complete any partial drafts and then send the completed response to the client. These are usually revisions of work from copy editors who did not do a good enough job to earn a 5 star.
How much do Wonder’s final editors earn?
A final editor’s job takes anywhere between 30 to 60 minutes. The pay is between $4 to $12 per job, depending on the amount of editing required.
Strategy
Strategy is the newest online job at Wonder. A strategist pre-searches the client’s topic to understand it and ensure that there is enough information to answer the question.
A strategist does all the background research and provides direction on how the research should proceed. They may propose creative alternatives to the research process to meet the client’s objectives.
How much do Wonder’s strategists earn?
The strategy job takes approximately 30 minutes, with a payment of $15 per job.
How to make more than $10 doing online research work as a Wonder researcher
Based on the various jobs discussed above, it is easy to make more than $10 per hour as a Wonder researcher. In fact, you can make so much more after gaining enough experience in the platform.
Use the following tips to earn more doing the above-discussed online research jobs on Wonder.
Always produce great quality work
For every project you work on at Wonder, you are reviewed and given a quality score. If you continually produce low-quality work, your access to jobs can be denied, or you can be completely removed from their system. Those with high scores are given priority to apply to more jobs on the platform.
What does this mean for you?
The only way you will make enough money on the Wonder platform is by continuously giving the best.
When jobs are fewer on the dashboard, analysts with the highest scores get the first priority to get them. This means if your scores are low, you can even stay for days without getting any jobs during low seasons. Thus, quality is king on Wonder.
Get approved for as many jobs as possible.
Once you learn how the system works and after some experience, you need to take more tests to get approved to other jobs on the platform.
Depending on the time of day, you find more jobs on one specific job type than another. If you get qualified for several job types, you can work on whatever is available.
Combine different types of jobs.
The advantage of getting approved for different jobs, as discussed earlier, is that you can get access to different jobs at a go. For example, you can combine a sourcing job with a copy edit job.
When you are sourcing, it is easy to proceed to copy editing since everything is still fresh in your mind instead of handing the job over to somebody else. This way, you earn twice for less amount of time taken.
If you are only a copy editor, for example, you have to wait for the process all the way from chat to interpret and to sourcing before you can start working. However, if you have access to the earlier jobs in the process, you don’t have to wait; you can start working immediately.
Work as much as possible
It goes without saying that the more you work, the more money you make. Set goals on how much you want to earn on the platform and work towards that. Talk to fellow analysts on the platform who earn a lot and get their secret sauce to earning more on the platform.
Pro Tip: Sometimes, you may need to work odd hours if you realize fewer jobs are in your time zone.
Use the arbitration process in case of a dispute.
Wonder provides an arbitration process should you have a dispute on the rating of your job. You can fill out their arbitration form stating why you disagree with the rating and why you need it changed.
The good thing is that your review score is temporarily removed during the arbitration process, and you can continue working without the low score affecting your access to jobs until the final decision is made. If the arbitration team agrees with you, your low score is removed, and if not, it is retained.
Do online research work on Wonder practically earn up to $42 per hour?
Looking at all the jobs I have discussed, is it really possible to earn more than $10 doing online work as a researcher on Wonder?
Let’s look at practical examples.
Example one – chatter
As a chatter, you earn $3 for a job that takes at least 5 minutes. If you worked non-stop for one hour as a chatter taking 5 minutes per chat, this is what you make:
$3 X 12 = $36 per hour
If it takes you 10 minutes per chat, this is what you would make:
$3 X 6 = $18 per hour
Example two – reviewer
As a reviewer, you earn $3.50 for a job that takes you at least 5 minutes to complete. If you worked non-stop for one hour as a reviewer, this is what you would make:
$3.50 X 12 = $42 per hour
If it takes you 10 minutes per review, this is what you would make:
$3.50 X 6 = $21 per hour
Example three – Sourcing plus copy edit
If you combined a sourcing job with a copy edit job, this is what you would make:
Take two hours for the sourcing job and earn $16, then take 30 minutes for the copy edit job and earn $10. So the average per hour pay is
Money paid is $16 + $10 = $26.
Time taken is 2.5 hours.
The average pay per hour is 26 divided by 2.5, which is $10.4.
Example four
Work on a strategy job and earn $15 for the one hour spent on the job.
